Title: Sustainability, Geosciences and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage

Speaker: Dr. Mukul Bhatia

Director of the Berg-Hughes Center, Texas A&M University

Abstract: Global sustainable development goals include economic prosperity, energy access and preservation of the environment. Geoscience is fundamental and has an important place in achieving all these goals. Preservation of the environment requires meeting the global CO2 emission goals. The Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is one technology which has the potential to significantlyhelp in achieving economic value as well as helping the environment. The CCUS is a solution that is capable of significantly reducing emissions from the use of fossil fuels mainly in power generation and industrial applications. It involves technologies to remove CO2 from flue gas and the atmosphere, transport via ship or pipeline, then either to use CO2 as a resource to create valuable products or to permanently store it deep underground in geological formations. The process offers a route to the deep emissions reductions needed across key industrial sectors, particularly in hard-to-abate industries like steel, cement and chemicals. The reservoir characterization techniques and technology used in the CCUS are similar to those used in oil and gas exploration and development. During the energy transition, adjustment will take place in job opportunities in the market place. However, for geoscientists having the skill sets, there will be new opportunities in the fields of carbon management, hydrogen energy, geothermal and water management, in addition to oil and gas recovery.
