CURRENT RESEARCH

  • 2D earthquake cycles on geometrically realistic Altyn Tagh Fault in northwest China. The interactions between fault geometry, dynamic rupture and stress history inherited from past earthquakes help explain the complexity revealed by recurrence intervals from paleoseismological records. The observation constrained models reveal complex rupture patterns and the effects of earthquake gates to occasionally pass dynamically propagating ruptures, leading to large multi-segment earthquakes.

  • 2D earthquake cycles on geometrically realistic San Andreas Fault and San Jacinto Fault in southern California. The numerical models emphasize on physics-based dynamic ruptures. Observations such as long-term slip rate, complexity in recurrence intervals and rupture extents from paleoseismological records are used to constrain the models. We try to understand the mechanical factors behind the complex earthquake rupture history on the fault system from a wide range of disciplines such as physics-based modeling, geology, geodesy and paleoseismology.

  • Fully dynamic earthquake cycles on a 3D strike-slip fault with a bend using EQsimu. EQsimu is a parallel finite element earthquake simulator that is capable of simulating earthquake cycles on geometrically complex fault systems with all phases of inter-seismic, co-seismic, nucleation, and post-seismic deformation. We try to understand how a bend structure, which is common in natural fault systems, affects earthquake dynamics over cycles.

  • Dynamic ruptures on a 3D bent strike-slip fault with off-fault damage. We try to understand why off-fault subhorizontal fractures exclusively exist near the bend of the exhumed North Branch of San Gabriel fault in southern California.
